Buying a used car in South Florida: CarMax Review

Buying a used car in South Florida

Thinking about buying a used car in South Florida?

I told you we were thinking about buying a used car. We went to CarMax today for a prearranged appointment with the salesman, Steve. (not to be confused with my husband, Steve) We arrived at 12:30 and were promptly greeted.

This was our first experience in buying a used car from Carmax, although I had previously sold one to them. They advertise that they “will buy yours, even if you don’t buy theirs”, that is true and they gave me a fair price on that car.

I will be honest here. I do not like buying cars. I don’t like the bargaining you have to do, which is another reason we chose CarMax, for its’  “no haggle” policy.  I am also not high maintenance. I will drive a car until it no longer runs, and then purchase another. The car we were looking for was to replace Steve’s, as I think he got his money’s worth out of the one he drove, as it has over 250,000 miles on it.

We had a price in mind when we went in, and that was the only downside to this experience. They didn’t have any cars in that price range. I am sure we could have waited and one may have come in, but we had dusted off the trade in, and I don’t think either one of us wanted to bring it back home.

Steve (the salesman) listened to what we wanted and although he could not accommodate a car in our initial price range, he did his best to try to find one for us. We searched for a slightly more expensive car, but still in our price range, and found the Suzuki Forenza, similar to the car pictured below:

Steve kept us entertained as we went back and forth on this car and another, and was patient as we went back to the lot several times to look at different cars we found in the computer. We finally found the Suzuki, and went back in to start the paperwork. We sat down, and almost didn’t get it, because someone else was trying to buy it too! Luck was on our side today, and we were able to purchase it. We also purchased an extended warranty, which covers the car in the event of major repairs, minus a small deductible.

They gave us a fair price on Steve’s van (we had checked Blue Book value before we went in) and I am sure Starkist will appreciate our trade. (Insert weak attempt at humor here)

We were in CarMax a total of 3 hours from start to finish, and the car was presented to us cleaned with a full tank of gas. Steve was an awesome salesman without being too “salesmany” and made us feel very comfortable. Overall, we would say if you are thinking about buying a used car, think CarMax.

Pre-owned cars are really good to choose but considering the car dealer you should get a car from is even a better part of our decision. I believe that CarMax is one of the best options in Florida.

Getting a new car (whether brand new or new to you) can be exciting. But the process you go through before the purchase can sometimes be stressful. I think CarMax has a great solution if you are buying a car. I’m not one that likes to wheel and deal so it’s a good way to avoid the hassles.

Hi, I don’t trust the used cars. The seller always knows its defects and don’t tell the buyer. But If the sales man is trustworthy then we can think about the used cars as he would increase the credibility.

Yes, I agree with carmax. Buying a used car is really tough and stressful stuff if you do not have much information about the car. CarMax can really help you in getting a good pre owned car as service provided by them is excellent.

Buying used car can be a very easy task if you done your home work, and it can be a painstaking task if approached wrong. When you are buying a used car, be clear with your objective of purchasing, so that will help you to select most suitable car.

I agree, Lyssa. The one thing I liked about CarMax is I don’t have the headache of “did I talk him down into the best deal, or could I have done better?” The prices are what they are.

I’m always worried that the car salesman is trying to take advantage of me when I buy so this sounds like a good system for me. I’ll be sure to keep it in mind next time I’m thinking about getting a car.

It really takes the pressure off of car buying, Donald 🙂

Hope that car is holding up well. I remember when buying a car used to be a stressful decision and a big one. For some reason I change cars almost every year (I buy second hand cars) and barely lose any money on them. I try not too spend too much on a car and something that is around 5 years old. Sometimes I even make money on them 🙂 Up to car number 14 and I am only 31 years old! I guess I like to mix it up quite often

How’s the car going? I love buying a new/used car, find it so much fun! The only part I don’t enjoy is the haggling over the price. But its something that you need to do, especially with dealers. Its good to know that there are some dealers which price their cars properly and don’t haggle as you mentioned in your article. I guess there is hope for us after all!

First of all, congratulation for owning the Suzuki. I hope it is running well till now. Personally I am not a big fond of buying used cars. I don’t know but I have a bad luck in using used cars. None of them lasts longer than 2-3 months. 🙁

I’ve actually worked at a car dealership before, though I was only cleaning cars I still got to hear a lot of what went on. One thing I witnessed has stuck in my mind for a while now and that was when I saw a car salesmen bring the car he was selling down to the back lot and turn off the check engine light with a scan tool. Always be cautious when buying used cars from a dealership.

Thanks for the post, what I always do when buying a used car is to make sure that I get at least a 2 year warranty on the engine and transmission. Yes, you pay a little more for this but it’s worth having the security in case something major happens.
