Thinking about buying a used car in South Florida?
I told you we were thinking about buying a used car. We went to CarMax today for a prearranged appointment with the salesman, Steve. (not to be confused with my husband, Steve) We arrived at 12:30 and were promptly greeted.
This was our first experience in buying a used car from Carmax, although I had previously sold one to them. They advertise that they “will buy yours, even if you don’t buy theirs”, that is true and they gave me a fair price on that car.
I will be honest here. I do not like buying cars. I don’t like the bargaining you have to do, which is another reason we chose CarMax, for its’ “no haggle” policy. I am also not high maintenance. I will drive a car until it no longer runs, and then purchase another. The car we were looking for was to replace Steve’s, as I think he got his money’s worth out of the one he drove, as it has over 250,000 miles on it.
We had a price in mind when we went in, and that was the only downside to this experience. They didn’t have any cars in that price range. I am sure we could have waited and one may have come in, but we had dusted off the trade in, and I don’t think either one of us wanted to bring it back home.
Steve (the salesman) listened to what we wanted and although he could not accommodate a car in our initial price range, he did his best to try to find one for us. We searched for a slightly more expensive car, but still in our price range, and found the Suzuki Forenza, similar to the car pictured below:
Steve kept us entertained as we went back and forth on this car and another, and was patient as we went back to the lot several times to look at different cars we found in the computer. We finally found the Suzuki, and went back in to start the paperwork. We sat down, and almost didn’t get it, because someone else was trying to buy it too! Luck was on our side today, and we were able to purchase it. We also purchased an extended warranty, which covers the car in the event of major repairs, minus a small deductible.
They gave us a fair price on Steve’s van (we had checked Blue Book value before we went in) and I am sure Starkist will appreciate our trade. (Insert weak attempt at humor here)
We were in CarMax a total of 3 hours from start to finish, and the car was presented to us cleaned with a full tank of gas. Steve was an awesome salesman without being too “salesmany” and made us feel very comfortable. Overall, we would say if you are thinking about buying a used car, think CarMax.
