How I spent $250 a month feeding a family of 5 – you can too!

Part of actively couponing is tracking how much money you are spending on groceries, having a budget and trying to stick to it.

In 2013 I set a grocery budget for our family of $250 a month, $3000 for the year. I am proud to say, after all the final numbers are in (I won’t shop anymore this year) we came in just under our budget at $2,826.65! While I went over some months, June and August are birthday months for us, and they were particularly high, but other months made up for it. My savings rate was 64%.

I now have to think about 2014. I think $250 a month is a realistic budget for us, especially with a new kitten rescue in the house. I keep pet food into the food budget as well. I think I will keep the budget the same, but try to increase my savings rate. If I lower my budget, unrealistically, I know myself, I will become discouraged.

What do you think? Should it remain $250 or should I try to reach an even better goal this year? Follow me along this journey, and please ask any questions in the comments! I love to help people save money.

I agree with you. I think you do great at the current budget and it can get very discouraging if you set an unrealistic budget for yourself. You can always put any overage in your budget towards savings.

That is my goal this year! I am going to participate in the savings challenge, have you heard of it? I am going to try to listen to my husband who says “You haven’t’t saved money, unless it’s saved!” I am going to participate in the savings challenge, have you heard of it?

Hi Danna and I hope you reach your gold this year! And good job in 2013! My hubby and I have been retired about a year now and need to say as much as we can on everything we possibly can. I was wondering, in you budget of $3000 a year, what type of things do you include beside food? Thanks!

Hi Gayle :) Thank you so much for your kind words! All our HBC products are also included in this budget, because my receipts from CVS are also tracked. Shampoo, body wash, shaving cream, razors, all these things you can buy for pennies on the dollar playing the “drugstore game”.

We also include pet food and treats into this budget as we usually make these purchases at Publix. Please let me know if I can help you in any way to meet your budgeting goals in 2014 :)

How do you do it Dana,I’v been a housewife for ten years but I still find myself in tight spots.I admire you for your animal rescue project. I’ve just retired myself and maybe an animal shelter would be a good project to pour my efforts into. Thanks for your story, it has given me some good ideas.

I would be thrilled if my family could manage to spend just $250 on groceries for the month. We look for specials, but I know we could do a better job with coupons. My goal is to start getting smart and more organized with my grocery shopping this year. I’ve also got to resist the urge to make impulse purchases when I’m at the store.
