You can’t eat healthy using coupons – and other myths

Some common myths people cite for not using coupons:

  • Coupons are only for processed foods
  • I eat healthy/organic and there are no coupons for my way of eating
  •  I buy generic and that is a lot cheaper than name brand products

Today, let’s talk about eating healthy using coupons. Sure, there are an abundance of coupons for processed foods, and I’ll admit it, when I first started couponing, I fell into that trap.

One day, my husband looked at me, and said “I don’t want you to coupon anymore”. Shocked, I said “why? The freezer is full, and I barely spent any money!”  ” Exactly, you may have spent hardly any money, but the freezer is full of CRAP! There are nothing but Bagel Bites, and french fries, and junk in there!”

I knew then, I had to change the way I used coupons, or he was right, we would be that family eating nothing but junk. So, I started looking for deals involving fruits, vegetables and meat. To my surprise, there were deals to be had. Mind you, I don’t save as much as when I was snagging every deal involving boxed foods, but I still spend on average, $250 a month for a family of 5. The freezer is full now, of vegetables, and meat, and I make sure every trip contains fresh fruit. How do I do this, you may ask?

You look out for the deals. For example, last week at Publix, there was a store coupon for $3 off cut fruit when you bought Tropicana Farmstand Juice, There was also a matching $1.50/2 Manufacturer coupon for the same juice in the 09/15  Red Plum.

Savvy shoppers know, if the Publix coupon does not state you have to buy a certain amount of fruit (previous coupons have stated on $3 or more) then you can use it on the little packages. You can even ask the produce department to break them up for you! They are good like that at Publix 😉

I ended up with 4 bottles of juice (healthy 100% fruit AND vegetable juice) and 2 packages of cantaloupes, 2 packages of honeydew and a bag of grapes all for under $3 when I used a $5/30 Winn Dixie coupon!

If you change the way you coupon, and as with anything in life, stay way from the foods you don’t want to eat, there are ways you can eat healthy using coupons!

Ask me any question in the comments on how to eat healthy using coupons, and I will do my best to answer.
